I was on a wesbite that posts lyrics. I was just poking around and checking things out when I came across “White Rabbit” by Grace Slick. Everything was ok until the last couple of lines:
Remember what the doorknob said …
Feed your head, feed your head
Say, what? Doorknob? No, I don’t think so.
I joined the website just to correct the line. And then I emailed a friend who is “of an age” with me. I quoted it to her, along with the correction.
She wrote that she always heard “door mouse,” but it could be doorknob.
I wrote “Dormouse. The dormouse is a character in Alice in Wonderland. It’s a friend of the Mad Hatter. A doorknob is no one’s friend and has been known to turn on you at a moment’s notice.”
I somehow feel that this was a cosmic set-up. It was a pun that was meant to be.
