I love the Cat and Bones series. Fun read. Female with a smart mouth, kicking ass and protecting the “innocent.” Male with smart mouth and fangs, has friends with smart mouths and fangs. What’s not to love?
I’m about halfway through “Destined for an Early Grave.” There’s a new antagonist that gives me pause. Most of the vamps Cat comes across want to collect her in the way that Ian does. Ian wants her in his household as a rare item. Some want to collect her as a dead body so they can be rid of the Red Reaper. Bones loves her and that’s collecting but in a different manner.
Now we get to Gregor. Gregor makes me think of a psychotic Pepe le Pew
French, check. Sexy, check. But domineering, moody, possessive, obsessive, suspicious — has all the makings of an abuser. The obsessive part seems to go along with the territorial thing the vamps have going on, but Gregor has stepped so far over the line that he can’t even see the line in his rear-view mirror. Cat gets her memories back of her time with Gregor and they are just plain creepy.
Bones isn’t acting much better at this point. I’m thinking Bones is being the way he is on order to trap Gregor. Since Gregor’s a Dreamsnatcher and we know that he has been able to get into Cat’s head for information, I can see Bones not sharing his plans with Cat. This makes her crazy — as do the drugs she taking to get her in and out of sleep without passing through REM. However, he’s complaining that Cat isn’t sharing her thoughts and feelings. Pot. Kettle. Black.
I know they will defeat Gregor. I suspect Don is dying, but I don’t know that for certain. I know they’re going to get back together. I know they’ll come to terms with their undersharing. I know Cat will choose to become vampire. And that little tirade Bones threw at her for not turning? Again, I say “Pot. Kettle. Black.” I know they’ll eventually have a wedding. I mean, seriously. We have more of the series to go!
I do wonder if they’ll ever get her mother to start behaving in a polite, civilized manner.
