Goodbye to my dearest Miss Steely

Yesterday I had to say goodbye to my old friend, Miss Steely. She had a thyroid condition that we had been dealing with since COVID.

On Tuesday I made an appointment to have her levels checked. I told the office she wasn’t eating , but she didn’t seem to be in pain. She was still sleeping up on the bed with me for part of the night. I was told I might want to take her to one of the emergency vets in town if Steels got worse. I have had to visit one of the locations three times. Two times were very bad experiences.

Miss Steely would climb on a chair to sleep, or on the bathroom floor. On Christmas day, she was sleeping in the soft carrier. She moved around in there, but I don’t think she drank any of the water I had put near her.

Thursday, I finally brought the carrier up onto the bed with me. She turned so she could use my arm as a pillow. When it was time to go to the vet, she didn’t make a fuss.

We were put in an exam room. The vet came in and said she could tell by Miss Steely’s face and posture, she was done. She was ready to leave this world. I was able to stay and talk to her the entire time. I told her I would miss her and love her always. Miss Steely used my arm as a pillow one last time. At 15:15 on December 26, 2024 she took her last breath.

I sat alone with her for about 15 minutes and cried, told her I was sorry if she ever felt unloved or unwanted, or third-best. I’m sure all three of my kitties felt that way at some point when I was giving another my attention.

Steely was 8 years old when I adopted her. She was surrendered to the SPCA. Her family was having a baby and Steely would bite when she got overstimulated — a fact that was withheld until after I adopted her. Over the years, Steely and I had words over that painful habit. She eventually changed it to little love nips.

I am absolutely going to open the doors wide at midnight on New Year’s. I have had enough bad in the recent years. I need to kick it to the curb and invite in good.
